Facing a Transition?
|
Are you losing sleep, anxious and distracted? Do you find yourself driving on automatic, ending up at the wrong destination? Or getting into accidents? Overeating or not eating much at all?
These are common reactions to the stress of making big life transitions. Even though you’ve done all the research and read self-help books, you’re still struggling.
When you don’t know the future and can’t predict the outcome, your mind keeps going over and over the choices, trying to find the right answer. Sometimes even your best friends or family can’t help and get tired of hearing you obsess.
Perhaps you’re scared about losing what’s familiar. Or you fear you’ll fail if you challenge yourself to do something new. Perhaps you and your partner cannot agree about what’s next.
Do any of the following stories sound similar to yours?
Peg and Alan are age 60 and 63. Peg’s an account executive. Alan has his own law firm. They’re both fit and healthy. Their jobs have consumed them for years to the point where they check emails on weekends.
They’ve dreamed of sailing and hiking when they retire. As they hit sixty, though, their ideas about when they’d retire and what they’d do have begun to diverge. Now they argue about this decision, so long desired and dreamed about. They can’t find an answer to their problems on their own.
Jason, age 35, is a successful software engineer. His work has been his #1 love. He’s dated a lot, but never thought about marriage. All of his friends are married … some have children.
For the past year he has been dating Lauren, divorced with a 5 year old son. He wonders if he can commit to someone…to settle down. He talks to his friends, but their advice…”Are you kidding? You have the best of both worlds!” is not helpful. He feels he has no one to turn to.
Lisa’s children are now all in school. She’s been Super Mom. She has a lot of energy and a college degree, but no clue about what to do next. She wonders, “Is this all there is?”
How did people handle the anxiety of life change in the past?
You might have consulted your doctor for a prescription for Xanax. Or seen a therapist for counseling, which took years of looking at why you’re stuck. And risked having a mental illness diagnosis on your medical record.

You might have questions, like…What can you, as a life coach, do for me? Can’t I have the same conversations with a good friend?
You are facing a big transition, a life change. Such as retirement. Or marriage…or divorce. Or having a baby…or your children leaving home. Or you want to change careers. You fear that all the things you’ve been familiar with will alter. You think about what you’re giving up, not what you’re likely to gain. You are filled with doubts…one day you’re certain about one decision, the next, you question yourself.
As a professional life and career coach, I listen intently to who you really are and what you want to do. I take your side, not the side of “you should” or your fears or how it’s always been in your family or our culture.
As a coach, I know that you carry the wisdom to be the person you want to be… but that your experience has placed barriers around you, keeping you less fulfilled than you can be.
As a coach, I inspire you to notice the beliefs and feelings that will assist you to live out your values, your passions, and your life purpose.
| “Unlike a friend or relative, Karma was not a stakeholder, so she helped me to see my pattern of not wanting to say “no.” Karma gave me the assignment to say “no” to 10 requests and then get back to her to review what happened. Since our coaching, I continue to be direct about saying “no” to something that is not my responsibility and it hasn’t caused anyone to get angry or not like me. I’m more confident and less irritable. Karma is a great listener but also an active participant in finding solutions. "

How do I know I can trust you to provide me with a high level of professional service, you wonder?
That’s an important question. One you want to think about because you value yourself and want to invest wisely in your future.
I want to give you every opportunity to get to know me. So, here’s some information about me…
I was stuck at a crossroads myself. I had been a psychotherapist for decades, with a thriving practice and rewarding clients. I’d put time, money, and energy into taking trainings to keep up with the most advanced treatment methods. It was all paying off in satisfaction for me and growth for my clients.
But, I wanted to find a way to deliver service in less time with more privacy. And without subjecting people to the indignities of what health insurance companies now require to document eligibility for benefits.
What to do? Should I give up what I had worked so hard to achieve? Should I let go of my professional identity and the financial security my profession offered me?
Then I heard about life coaching from a therapist friend. I was skeptical at first. Is this some fad, I wondered? How is it different from what I already do with my high-functioning therapy clients? Is it dumbing down my skills, as a friend asked?
I took an extensive training program at the Institute for Life Coach Training, a program for people transitioning from therapist to coach…and was I impressed! It inspired me to re-think my goals and priorities. It energized me to embark on a new career…even though I was getting to be around 60! and could well have thought about retiring.
Now I can reach a global audience who can schedule to work with me at their convenience, at the airport, in their hotel room on a business trip, even while at work if they can find a private space.
Here’s an example of how coaching can work:
You might wonder how coaching has helped Peg and Alan, the couple I mentioned earlier who were in trouble about planning their retirement together.
I asked them to go back in time and create a life history. From that we found many small experiences where they were in Flow, in the Zone… Where they were so involved, that time passed effortlessly.
They created a life plan for the coming years that included the attributes of these Flow experiences. They both wanted to do something that excited and challenged them. They wanted to sail and hike, but couldn’t imagine giving up everything to do that. They also wanted to give back some of what they had each received from generous people when they were youngsters from low-income backgrounds.
They decided to use their legal and business skills to create a non-profit organization to help inner-city children to learn to sail. They are working now at setting up the details of the program, before they begin to phase out of their full-time careers.
"Retired early from a demanding job in a Beverly Hills hotel doing catering sales, I was having difficulty adjusting to not having the pressures of deadlines. Karma worked with me to live in the now, to appreciate the small things, to fulfill myself without depending on others to do that for me. She directed my attention to what drains my energy and what I can do to energize myself. She helped me let go of some of my "shoulds." With her encouragement and support, I've been able to see new possibilities in my life." Linda Kent, |
